Experience needed for Shropshire Minor Counties clash
Friday 9th July 2010, 12:44PM BST.
Experienced duo Adam Shimmons and Mark Downes have been called up for Shropshire’s big Minor Counties Trophy semi-final at Hertfordshire on Sunday.
Shifnal seamer Shimmons played the group game against Northumberland at Oswestry earlier in the competition, while the last four clash will represent a first appearance of the season for Wellington allrounder Downes.
They are brought into the team as Steve Taylor misses out through work commitments and Michael Barnard still hasn’t recovered from a groin problem.
Shrewsbury’s Rob Foster has declared himself fit after a hip injury, but team-mate Joe Leach is ruled out through Worcestershire commitments.
“I think Adam Shimmons and Mark Downes both played in the final the last time Shropshire got there (in 2003) so they are used to the big games,” said captain Ed Foster.
“Mark Downes has had a very good season for Wellington so far.
“He has done well with bat and ball and is an excellent fielder so he is a good all-round cricketer.
“We have been trying to get him in the team at various points during the season but it’s the first time he has been available.”
The winner of Sunday’s 50-overs-per-side clash — to be played at Welwyn Garden City — will book their place in the final at Durham’s Riverside ground on Wednesday, August 11.
