Damien Nicholls is Shropshire table tennis champ
Wednesday 7th July 2010, 11:00PM BST.
Shropshire table tennis ace Damien Nicholls has become a national champion – for a record fourth consecutive year.
Nicholls, from Quatford in Bridgnorth, has won the English Table Tennis Association under-21 Grand Prix title after finishing top of the pile at the end of 10 events.
He also finished second in the seniors championship, behind only Scotland’s No 1 Gavin Rumgay.
The exploits of Nicholls have earned him recognition beyond England, and he has now been signed to play for Pontoise Cergy in the French National League. The 19-year-old will commute fortnightly to France, and will also move from Grantham College Academy to Sheffield Hallam University.
That will enable him to be closer to the national training headquarters at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
The next major event for Nicholls, who is hoping to represent Britain at the Olympics in 2012, comes when he dons the England vest at the Ostend Open in Belgium next month.
And one of the key aspects to his future success is finding new sponsorship. Anybody interested should contact 01746-762532.
