Shrews boss Turner considers signing Paul Emslie
Tuesday 6th July 2010, 2:26PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner – who today appointed Paul Gerrard as his goalkeeping coach – is running the rule over former Rangers and Scottish under-19 midfielder Paul Emslie.
The 22-year-old joined the League Two side on trial yesterday and is expected to remain with Shrewsbury for at least the next week.
Emslie came through the ranks at Ibrox, and made a first team appearance against East Fife in a League Cup game in 2007.
But he has struggled to make a breakthrough with the Glasgow giants and has now been released, having had loan spells with Clyde and Peterhead over the last two years.
“Paul’s a midfield player that has been with Rangers for quite some time,” Turner said today.
“He has been out on loan and Peterhead wanted to sign him but he is keen to stay in full-time football.
“Paul has been recommended to us by somebody who has recommended players from up there to the club in the past.
“We have followed that up by getting a report from Rangers on his assets and we will take a look at him.”
Emslie’s shot at earning a contract at the Greenhous Meadow comes hot on the heels of news that former Walsall midfielder and Welsh international Mark Bradley is also attracting interest from Shrewsbury.
Meanwhile, former Premier League shot-stopper Gerrard has been unveiled as new goalkeeping coach.
Gerrard had spells at Oldham, Everton — who signed him for £1m — Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United during his playing career.
He joins Shrewsbury on a part-time basis.
“Paul was in with us on Friday and again yesterday and I have been delighted,” said Turner.
“His sessions will be challenging for our keepers and I am sure that they will benefit from working with Paul.
“I do feel we need to add another keeper to our squad and with Paul’s help we will be looking to bring one in.”
