Shropshire storm up cricket’s Birmingham League

Shrewsbury stormed back up to second in the Birmingham League premier division after a convincing 84-run victory over Kidderminster.

Batting first, Shrewsbury gained immediate control with the bat as they racked up 299-7 off their 55 overs.

Ed Foster led the way with his second League century in three weeks as he made 110, while Joe Leach hit 102.

Spinner Alex Blofield was then the hero with the ball, taking 5-70 to help dismiss Kidderminster for 215.

Elliott Green celebrated his call-up to the Shropshire squad with 3-52.

Wellington suffered their third successive defeat after feeling the full force of champions and current table toppers Knowle & Dorridge.

Former Shropshire ace Atiq Chishti was one of two centurions for K & D who rattled up 325-3 off their 55 overs.

And despite overseas professional Gerhard Strydom making 110 in Wellington’s reply, the visitors crumbled from 207-3 to 219 all out.

“They played very, very well but we also contributed to our own downfall by dropping the two centurions,” said manager Terry O’Connor.

“The professional then played fantastically but he is not getting much support at the moment and to lose the last seven wickets for so few was a big disappointment.”

Shifnal are celebrating back to back victories in division one after a thumping 135-run victory at Coventry & NW.

Anthony Parker starred with the bat with an unbeaten 120 as Shifnal declared on 301-5 in 55 overs.

David Powles also made 60 while there was a late cameo from Martyn Davies who scored 40.

And the result wasn’t in doubt from that moment on as paceman Adam Shimmons and spinner James Kidson each took five wickets as the home side were dismissed for just 166.

“We hardly did a thing wrong,” said captain Stuart Blount. “Anthony batted very sensibly for his century which was very pleasing.

“The pitch suited James Kidson and he bowled exceptionally well and Adam will take wickets anywhere.”
