World Cup quiz – the answers

Here are the answers to our picture quiz in the England v Germany supplement published in the Shropshire Star on Saturday, June 26.

1. David Seaman lets in Ronaldinho’s long-range shot in the quarter final against Brazil in 2002.

2. Stand-in goalkeeper Peter Bonnetti picks another West Germany effort out of the net as the defending champions went out of the 1970 World Cup. First choice keeper Gordon Banks had food poisoning.

3. They think it’s all over . . . it almost was, as Geoff Hurst’s “did it really cross the line?” effort was ruled a goal in the 1966 final against West Germany. His fellow striker Roger Hunt is in the picture.

4. David Beckham exorcises his demons, scoring the penalty which won the game against Argentina 1-0 in 2002.

5. David Platt scores the winner against Belgium in the second round in 1990, just seconds before the end of extra time.

6. Michael Owen announced himself on the international scene with one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time, beating half the Argentinian team to slot home in 1998.

7. The Hand of God – Diego Maradona’s controversial goal past Peter Shilton which famously ended England’s 1986 campaign in a 2-1 defeat against Argentina.

8. Biggest upset ever? Shropshire goalkeeper Bert Williams looks on helplessly as a Joey Gaetjens effort gives the USA part-timers a shock 1-0 victory over England in the 1950 World Cup.
