Graham Turner says loans are the key

Boss Graham Turner could be set to become Shrewsbury Town’s loan arranger – in order to replicate the promotion success he had at Hereford.

Turner, who has returned to Shrewsbury after 26 years, took the Bulls out of League Two in 2008 with a side largely based on talented loan players that he could not otherwise have afforded to sign.

He is actively looking to bring fresh faces to Town – especially after learning that defender Kelvin Langmead is on the verge of a move to Peterborough and that Canadian Terry Dunfield also wants to leave.

And the experienced manager insists he would have no trouble following the loan route at Shrewsbury in order to produce the same end result.

“Any manager who doesn’t (use the loan market) is foolish,” said Turner, who was unveiled as Paul Simpson’s successor on Friday last week.

“I think there are young players who we could possibly never have afforded – certainly at Hereford and possibly here – that managers at senior clubs are prepared to let out on loan to gain experience.

“We worked it well at Hereford and you see it elsewhere too. Nigel Pearson did it at Leicester, when they were promoted they had five players from big clubs – Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool.

“They got promotion on the back of five loan players consistently in their team and I have no qualms about the loan system and using it to good effect.”

    1. Filling your side with loanees is short term, what do you next year, or the year after.
    2. For loan players you still pay out wages and a loan fee, but when they go back to parent clubs you have nothing. At least you can bring cash in by selling your own players.
    3. All fans support the team, but they also have favourite players, how can you fully support players who are not ‘yours’.

We hear there is some money in the club, so lets invest it correctly and wisely.

Surely if you haven’t got it already you have to buy in the core of a good team?

I just can’t see the point of looking at short-term fixes. How on earth does that help build a team for the future that can achieve success?

I am of course, more than happy to be proven very wrong!
