Four Shropshire judokas will be travelling with a 19-strong British squad to compete for Olympic qualification points at the Moscow Grand Slam next month, writes CHRIS HUDSON.

Telford duo Gemma Howell and Kelly Edwards and Shrewsbury’s Danny Williams have all been selected at Grand Slam level for the first time in their young careers.

Sarah Adlington, from Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, will also be on the plane for the event which runs over the weekend of July 3 and 4.

The tournament is one of just four Grand Slams on the International Judo Federation’s calendar, joining Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Fighters from across the world will be competing for valuable qualification points towards the London Olympics in 2012.

Howell has only recently returned to action after a 10-month injury lay-off and has been competing at under-63kgs, but has been selected for the Moscow trip in her more usual under-57kgs section.
