Capello still undecided over Algeria goalkeeper
Thursday 17th June 2010, 12:28PM BST.
England boss Fabio Capello has yet to make his mind up about his goalkeeper for tomorrows crucial World Cup clash with Algeria fuelling speculation that Shropshire keeper Joe Hart could be in line for a start.
Robert Green’s place is under threat following his glaring mistake in the 1-1 draw with the United States last weekend. And that could open the door for Hart, who has yet to start a competitive international.
With Green under pressure and question marks about David James’ fitness, Shrewsbury-born Hart could be the player to benefit from any Capello changes.
And that decision would earn Shrewsbury an estimated £500,000 as part of the deal which took the 23-year-old to Manchester City in 2006.
“Robert Green made one mistake,” said the Italian of his goalkeeper, who made such a calamitous error to gift Clint Dempsey a goal that cost England victory.
“But he also made a great save in the second half. I have to decide about the keeper because sometimes a mistake stays in the mind of the players so I want to speak with him.”
Capello has already confirmed that Gareth Barry will come straight back into the side after injury, while the Italian added he is also contemplating changes further up the park with Emile Heskey’s place under threat from Jermain Defoe.
Meanwhile, the England boss branded the controversial Jabulani World Cup ball as the worst he has ever known.
Capello is not a fan, and while he expects an improvement from his side in tomorrow’s clash with Algeria in Cape Town, it will be no thanks to the ball he hates.
“This is the worst ball that I have seen in my life,” he said. “It is terrible for the players and it is terrible for the keepers.”
- Australia were today boosted by the news key man Tim Cahill will only miss one World Cup game following his sending-off against Germany.
