Evolution, not revolution is Graham Turner’s view

New boss Graham Turner will resist the temptation to carry out major surgery on Shrewsbury Town’s playing squad – but will make the addition of pace a priority.

Turner breezed back into the club yesterday, agreeing a three-year contract – 26 years after his first stint at the club came to an end.

And, having already started to assess the playing resources at his disposal, the 62-year-old insists he is looking at evolution rather than revolution.

“Right at the moment, my thoughts are that it would be minor tinkering,” he said. “I think the addition of pace and the addition of a striker or several strikers would help the cause.

“It looks fairly solid defensively and there are quite a few midfield players to select from.

“For me, it’s about getting the best out of those that are here and adding a few more to the squad just to strengthen it.

“There’s no pre-conceived ideas. I have no natural No 1s or No 5s – each player has to prove they are good enough to be in the starting line-up come early August.”

Turner is delighted to again be in charge of the club where he so successfully launched his managerial career in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

But he admits the thought of damaging his high reputation with the Shrewsbury fans had initially made him think twice about whether to return.

“There is still a lot of affection from the supporters,” he said. “I’ve always sensed it when I’ve come back here or they’ve come to play my teams at Hereford.

“The last thing I want to do is lose that affection, but the opportunity of coming here and giving it a real go did appeal to me.

“Any negative thoughts of what might happen were soon put to one side, I’m optimistic by nature and I come into the job with the enthusiasm to take the club forward.”
