Share your ‘World Cup moments’

Every football fan has their own “World Cup moment”. A timeless photo frame which transports them back to a classic match from the past, writes Carl Jones.

Those lucky enough to be around when Bobby Moore lifted the trophy in 1966, and Geoff Hurst scored “that goal” in off the underside of the Wembley crossbar, won’t struggle to pick their highlight.

But my moment came late into the evening of June 26, 1990, when Bobby Robson’s England were taking on Belgium in a tense second round clash.

As the match crept ominously towards a dreaded penalty shootout, a free kick was chipped deep into the right hand side of the Belgian penalty area, where Steve Bull, striking legend from my beloved Wolverhampton Wanderers, was lurking.

In the flash of a boot, an overhead kick rocketed into the back of the net, and England had snatched victory at the death.

I leapt up onto the sofa. It tipped over, and I fell backwards in a clatter of remote controls, ready salted crisps and coffee cups.

Joy, however, has a strange way of masking the pain, and I set off on a lap of honour around the house, mimicking the famous Steve Bull “aeroplane” which was one of his trademark goalscoring celebrations in his glory years.

The excitement spilled over into the garden at one point, as I chanted Bully’s name to anyone who had the misfortune of being within earshot in the sleepy village of Cleedownton, near Ludlow, where I was living at the time.

By the time I got back into the room, the match was over. “Now they’ve got to pick Bully in the starting line-up for the quarter final,” I yelled, not quite clocking the perplexed looks on my pals’ faces. “They’ll give him the freedom of Wolverhampton for this.”

Eventually, one of them mustered the courage to do the decent thing and put me out of my misery. It was David Platt who had scored. Not Bully. They’d both been standing together in the penalty box.

I righted the settee, picked up my coffee cup, tidied up the fast food mountain on the carpet, and retired sheepishly to the kitchen.
