Liam Blakeman leaves AFC Telford United
Thursday 10th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Player of the year Liam Blakeman has left AFC Telford United – accepting an offer to join former club Southport in the Blue Square Premier instead.
The 27-year-old was offered terms by the Bucks after meeting manager Andy Sinton earlier in the week.
But the opportunity to link up with former boss Liam Watson and step up a division proved too strong for the Lancashire-based midfield playmaker.
“Liam was very impressed by our plans but it’s purely the lure of playing in the next division up that has made up his mind,” said Sinton.
“It’s nothing to do with money or anything else, he just couldn’t resist the chance to play in the league above for a club on his doorstep.
“We’ve told him to stay in touch and we’ll be monitoring the situation if it doesn’t work out for him there.”
Chairman Lee Carter added: “We matched Southport pound for pound but in the end the choice for Liam came down to one between Conference Premier and Conference North football and there wasn’t a jot we could do about it.”
Meanwhile, Sinton has more meetings lined up with potential signings – and is hopeful of completing one deal over the next couple of days. He also plans to hold talks with defender Adam Dugdale and forward Steve Thompson when they return from holiday next week.

In response to Dave Mather (#1) – The new target will be Ashley Wooliscroft, based upon his performances for TUFC 8 years ago rather than the accomplished player that he is now.
