Wooliscroft delighted to be a Buck
Sunday 6th June 2010, 9:00AM BST.
New defender Ashley Wooliscroft today revealed his delight at signing for AFC Telford United – after turning down an offer from rivals Eastwood Town.
The 30-year-old has joined the Bucks from Stafford on a one-year contract, though there is an option for a second year if both parties are happy.
And Wooliscroft is raring to go, having revealed how Telford’s approach came in the nick of time.
He had made up his mind to leave Stafford Rangers but was set to put pen to paper with Nottinghamshire side Eastwood before Bucks boss Andy Sinton made his move.
He certainly has experience of challenging at the top of the Blue Square Bet North, having helped Stalybridge and Fleetwood to reach the play-offs in recent seasons.
“I was on the verge of signing for Eastwood when I had the phone call from Andy,” Wooliscroft revealed.
Plasterer
“He talked to me about his plans and what he wants. He is ambitious and I agreed to sign very quickly.
“Telford are by far the biggest club in the league, especially now Fleetwood have gone, so it was an easy decision.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be back. I can’t wait to get going in pre-season.”
Stoke-based Wooliscroft is looking forward to returning to the New Bucks Head, where he played as a youngster after leaving his hometown club.
And, while the old Telford might have played a division higher, the self-employed plasterer admits the current club has a much bigger feel about it
“I had two good seasons there in the Conference, he said. “We had a good team, but the club has grown so much since then.
“We were getting gates of 750 to 1,000 but now, if the team is winning and playing good football, the crowds can go up to 2,000-plus. It’s unbelievable for this league.”
