Michael Barnard to miss county opener

Friday 4th June 2010, 9:49AM BST.

Shropshire’s cricketers have been forced into a late change for their opening Minor Counties Championship clash this weekend – after losing key bowler Michael Barnard.

The Shrewsbury quickie has been withdrawn from the team heading to Wiltshire for the three-day game which gets underway on Sunday.

“Mike is playing for the Oxford University and they have requested we leave him out of this game,” said Shropshire captain Ed Foster.

“If he plays, he would have been involved in eight consecutive days of cricket which wouldn’t be ideal for him so we have agreed to the request.”

Barnard’s Shrewsbury team-mate Will Parton comes into the side and will bat at No 7.

And Foster insists he remains confident his team still have enough bowling options.

“It’s not quite the side we wanted to play,” he added.

“But we have still got the three seaming options in Steve Taylor, Dan Bowen and Jono Whitney and three spin options in Andy Gray, Rob Foster and Alex Huxley.”
