Andy Sinton looks to ‘old’ AFC Telford for first new face

Defender Ashley Wooliscroft today checked in at AFC Telford United as boss Andy Sinton’s first new signing.
The 30-year-old has signed a one-year contract to return to the New Bucks Head, having played under Jake King for the old Telford United at the start of the century.
Right-back Wooliscroft started his career at Stoke City and, since leaving Telford the first time, has picked up extensive non-League experience with the likes of Leek, Stalybridge and Fleetwood.
He impressed at Stafford Rangers last season, where he played under the new Telford assistant manager Darren Read.
But Sinton insists he has not been brought in as a direct replacement for Lee Vaughan, who moved to Kidderminster Harriers last month.
“Ashley comes with a wealth of experience,” said Sinton.
“Right-back is a position we’ve been looking to fill but he’s not replacing Lee because he’s not the same type of player.
“People need to understand that and he needs to come in and be himself.
“He’s someone I thought of straight away and when I mentioned his name to Darren, he recommended him highly.
“He’s turned down two better financial offers at clubs in the same league to come to us and that is a credit to him.”
Meanwhile, Sinton has also held talks with three midfielders from Telford’s existing squad.
He has put an offer on the table for Kevin O’Connor, who is now weighing that up against a rival bid from Worcester City.
And he has spoken by phone with supporters’ player of the year Liam Blakeman. The two will hold face-to-face talks next week.
Sinton also met with Phil Trainer, who he believes could prove to be a real asset if he can get the best out of the Wolverhampton-based man.
“He’s one of the most talented players in the league and he just needs someone to make him tick,” said Sinton.
“I’ve signed players in the past who people have said I wouldn’t be able to handle or get the best out of, and I’ve managed to do it.”
