Oswestry fail to Penn back visitors
Tuesday 1st June 2010, 8:00PM BST.
On-song Whitchurch stormed nine points clear at the top of Birmingham League division two after a stunning 10-wicket triumph at much-fancied Ombersley.
Amjad Ali Khan continued his spectacular season with a six-wicket haul as the home side were skittled for 94 after they surprisingly elected to bat.
Maz Hasnain chipped in with three wickets and then made an unbeaten half-century as he and Simon Bowen cruised past the total without any alarms.
“It was a brilliant performance and certainly not what we were expecting,” said captain Bowen.
“We went there prepared for a really tough game but the lads all bowled superbly.”
Bridgnorth were left to rue a disastrous batting collapse as they suffered a narrow one-wicket defeat at home to Old Elizabethans.
Pete Thompson and Tom Whitney both scored 50 as Bridgnorth looked well set to post a reasonable total as they reached 152-4.
But the last six wickets fell for just eight runs as the home side were dismissed for just 160 in the penultimate over.
Sam Huxley’s four wickets gave Bridgnorth hope but it was the Old Elizabethans who held their nerve to cross the line by one wicket.
Extra over
“It was a big disappointment because, while the fielding was exceptional, we batted very poorly at the end of the innings,” said manager Ray Perry. “To make matters worse, by getting bowled out in the 54th over we gave them an extra over to get the runs and they won the game off the fifth ball of that extra over.”
St Georges suffered a heavy home defeat to Aston Manor in division two.
The visitors recovered from 17-3 to reach 223 all out.
And, after a sound start from St Georges which saw them reach 48-1, wickets tumbled as the hosts were bowled out for 121.
Oswestry were forced to settle for a winning draw from their home clash with Penn in division three.
Despite Sam Huxley taking 4-71 and Mark Robinson three wickets, the visitors racked up 264-8 from their 55 overs.
Oswestry looked on course for victory when they reached 212-3, with 14-year-old Joe Carasco making an excellent 52.
But wickets then tumbled, including Mudassir Pasha for 97 after he batted the second half of his innings with a runner, and Oswestry ended on 233-8.
“Our fielding and bowling wasn’t as good as it has been but it will was still a decent performance,” said club captain Mike Robinson.
