Andy Sinton gets AFC Telford United backing from Paul Simpson
Saturday 29th May 2010, 12:00PM BST.
Andy Sinton has been backed to bring the glory days to AFC Telford United – by his former Wolves team-mate and ex-Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson.
New boss Sinton has become the latest figure charged with attempting to lead the Bucks back to the top flight of non-League football.
And Simpson, who had a spell with Sinton at Wolves in 1999-2000, believes the Bucks hierarchy have made the correct decision in opting for the former England international.
“I always thought Andy was a very intelligent footballer and a really nice bloke,” said Simpson.
“He has had a good record in five years working at Fleet and regularly got them to play-offs so he has had good grounding.
“It’s about him going in there and trying to get everyone to deal with the expectation because that’s a big part of it at Telford.”
Simpson admitted he was impressed with his fellow-left winger when the pair were team-mates at Molineux.
“Andy had a great career as a player,” said Simpson, who has made no secret of his desire to return to football employment after being sacked by Shrewsbury four weeks ago.
“He came in to Wolves and basically took my place but I don’t hold that against him!
“He is a very quiet, thoughtful sort of bloke who has worked very hard to get to this level.
“My fingers are crossed it will work out for him and I’m sure it will.”
Meanwhile, Sinton is determined to hit the ground running and has already started work on bringing in new faces.
“I’ve got three or four irons in the fire, and I’m very close to an agreement to sign a player who I think will prove to be very useful to us,” he revealed.
“I’m also working on a couple of other deals. Both players involved are excited at the prospect of coming to work with me and at this club.”
