Star trio in world line-up
Thursday 27th May 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Three Shropshire women have been named in a seven-strong GB judo squad to compete at the Romanian Women’s World Cup next month.
Telford teenagers Gemma Howell and Kelly Edwards will be joined by Shrewsbury’s Sarah Adlington on the flight to Bucharest for the two-day event on June 5 and 6.
Edwards is fresh from competing in the recent European Championships and will once again be entered in the under-48kgs section.
Adlington, who hails from Bayston Hill but is now based in Edinburgh, was a reserve for the Europeans. The 2010 British Open champion will step up to the mat in the over-78kgs category.
Howell, who is now based with the national judo squad in the south-east, will compete in her second event since her return from a 10-month injury, although her weight category is yet to be announced by head coach Guy Roux.
The young star, who has made her place previously in the under-57kg weight category, competed in the under-63kg competition at the British Open Championships.
She seemed untroubled by the change, winning another gold medal to add to her glittering collection.
