Stadium’s new name is chosen
Monday 24th May 2010, 11:32AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town will play their home games at the Greenhous Meadow next season, it was announced today.
The name was the overwhelming winner of a fans’ vote to find a new name for the Oteley Road ground after the club agreed a new sponsorship deal with car and van supplier Greenhous.
The name is a nod to the club’s former Gay Meadow stadium, which the League Two club left three years ago.
The name Greenhous Meadow was added to a list of choices in response to calls from supporters. Several thousand votes were cast online, by post and by telephone during the two week voting period.
One voter will be picked at random to conduct the official naming ceremony at the first home game of the season in August, and will win VIP match tickets to that game.
Dave Sullivan, director and general manager of Greenhous Vauxhall and Saab, said: “As part of our decision to sponsor the ground as a natural extension of our ongoing sponsorship of the club’s shirts, we wanted to get fans involved in the naming process.
“We really want to get as many supporters, customers and staff as possible involved with our sponsorship, and the vote to name the ground was just the first of a series of initiatives to give as many people as possible the opportunity to participate.”
New signs will go up towards the end of June.

Will it still be The Greenhous Meadow when another company sponsors it next time?

I assume the ‘Meadow’ suffix will now remain permanently, with the first part of the stadium name changing whenever sponsorship deals change. 99.9% of fans will probably just refer to the stadium simply as ‘The Meadow’ anyway, with only radio announcers or official reports using the full ‘Greenhous Meadow’ name (in the same way that no Newcastle Utd fans ever call their stadium ‘Sportsdirect.com @ St. James’ Park Stadium’ – it’s simply ‘St. James’ Park’).
‘Greenhous Meadow’ is certainly better than one of the other original proposals – ‘The Greenhous Coliseum’
