Shropshire judo ace Gemma Howell marked her return from a 10-month injury absence with gold as Britain won seven medals on day one of the British Open Championships in Crawley.

Stepping up from the -57kg to the -63kg weight category, Howell saw off American Anna Palmer and Spain’s Maier Uriarte before beating fellow Briton Faith Pitman – who ended up fifth – in the semi-final and triumphing by a yuko point in the final against Holland’s Jennifer Wichers.

Fellow Shropshire ace Sarah Adlington emulated that feat with victory in the +78kg class, beating Spaniard Alicia Alonso by ippon in the final.
