Bob relives 1966 World Cup memories

A Mid Wales man has been reminiscing about his 1966 World Cup memories as the countdown gets under way to this year’s tournament.
Bob Whittock, 79, from Lake Vyrnwy, was involved in football coaching during the 1966 competition in Britain and found himself appointed the liaison for the Argentine team.
He decided to share his memories with the website 192.com which has been asking people to talk about their World Cup memories, as it seeks to reunite witnesses to England’s World Cup victory.
“I had finished my amateur playing days and had started coaching. I went to Lilleshall, spent the day with the England players and saw all of the games up until the quarter final,” he said.
“But, as the Argentine team had been knocked out, I had no ticket for the final. However, a few days before the day, I had a phone call to say I had won a ticket in a raffle.
“Not many people know this but prior to the game, all teams not in the final were to return home, and most did so taking their supporters with them.
“Hence there were thousands of tickets going begging at the game. Police on horses had pockets full of them, giving them out to anyone who wanted them.”
Recalling the final, Mr Whittock, said: “It was an incredible day. Jack Charlton’s performance in defence really stood out for me.”
