Tigers build new team

Telford Tigers player-coach Tom Watkins is building a brand new team, but there is already a familiar feel as the first two signings for next season are announced returning Slovakian All Star Marek Hornak and the coach’s own younger brother, Jack Watkins.

While the signing of Hornak is not unexpected, given that he is now settled in the town and an established English Premier League player, Watkins’ other new recruit is sure to raise a smile amongst observers.

Having enjoyed a successful junior career, and impressing at Coventry Blaze ENL, Jack Watkins shows every sign of following in the footsteps of older siblings Tom and Joe, a former Tigers goalie.

The 17-year-old is no stranger to Telford, having been a guest player with the town’s junior teams in the Czech Christmas Cup tournament every year since under-11s.

He said: “I know a lot of the Telford players very well, like Luke Brittle and James Warman, so it will be like being at home really. Although I have played with my brother before, I’ve not played for him, so that will be new. The two-way deal lets me train with Coventry’s Elite team a couple of times a week, but get regular ice time with Telford.

“I think this season will be good for my development and progress. Tom will put together a good team, with the budget he’s got, and we will be competitive.”

Telford-based Hornak joined the Tigers in 2007 and took the top goalscorer award in 2009.

With the team mothballed last season pending new management, Hornak spent the year with Telford’s ENL side, the Titans, but never made any secret of his hopes for this year.

The 26-year-old said: “I want to thank everyone who has been involved in setting up the supporters’ trust and getting the Tigers back into the Premier League. As a player I think it is great that we have a chance to compete at that level again.”

Watkins added: “He is an honest guy on the ice. I expect Marek to be among our leading points scorers this year.”

The club continues to appeal for new members and sponsorship — anyone interested can find out more at www.telfordtigers.co.uk
