Title joy is sealed for Ellesmere
Monday 10th May 2010, 10:04AM BST.
Ellesmere Rangers have the champion feeling after holding their nerve to seal the West Midlands League premier division title.
The north Shropshire side were 2-1 victors over AFC Wulfrunians on Saturday in front of a near 400-crowd at Beech Grove.
The outcome was in the balance until the final 10 minutes with Danny Barton’s early penalty cancelled out by a Wulfrunians leveller.
But Gary Meredith was the Ellesmere hero as he popped up with the championship-clinching goal.
Had Rangers not defeated third-placed Wulfrunians, they would have been pipped to the title by Bloxwich.
It means Ellesmere will be playing alongside Bridgnorth and Shifnal – if the latter avoid relegation – in next season’s Midland Alliance, just 10 years after they were competing in division one of the Shropshire Premier League.
“It’s a fantastic achievement by everyone at the club,” said thrilled manager Matt Burton.
