Town board in no rush to name boss

Shrewsbury Town’s Board today insisted they will not be rushed in to appointing the club’s new manager – after receiving more than 40 applications.

As the hunt for Paul Simpson’s successor enters its second week, vice-chairman Keith Sayfritz played down any expectations of a swift announcement.

“We want to take our time to ensure we get the best possible candidate to help drive this club forward,” said vice-chairman Keith Sayfritz, speaking on behalf of chairman Roland Wycherley and the Board.

“Getting the right appointment is far more important than getting a quick one.

“We had had over 40 applications and that shows how highly the club are thought of in the game.

“The chairman, myself and James (Hughes, director) are sifting through them and we still have applications coming in it’s been a steady flow.”

Sayfritz also confirmed the future of a plethora of out-of-contract players will be revealed this week.

A host of names have been linked with the Town manager’s job, and retired defender Mike Jackson who took charge along with Head of Youth Dave Hughes of Saturday’s 1-1 season-ending draw at Port Vale has revealed he would like to play some part in the club’s future.

“I think I have got something to offer to this club in the management team whether that be coach or manager is not for me to say,” said the 36-year-old.

“I know the club and know the players and I have had an insight this season.”

Dave Hibbert was the main winner at last night’s official player-of-the-year awards at the Prostar Stadium.

Out-of-contract Hibbert, who has been linked with a move to Portsmouth, won the main player of the year award and the top goalscorer gong.

The supporters’ end-of-season presentation takes place at the ground tomorrow night, with the full squad due to be in attendance.

Dave Hibbert linked with Portsmouth!? The lad is average at his very best in league 2 …… I for one will be glad to see the back of him!
