Former England winger Andy Sinton today publicly confirmed his interest in becoming AFC Telford United’s new manager, declaring: “They have so much potential.”

Sinton is currently boss of Fleet Town in the Ryman League division one south, where he has enjoyed success on a limited budget during his five-year reign.

He was first linked with the Telford job two weeks ago in the immediate aftermath of Rob Smith’s departure, and is believed to be one of less than 10 shortlisted by the Bucks’ Board for interview.

The 44-year-old led Fleet to three consecutive play-off campaigns and, though they missed out on the last day this time around, they do have three cup finals to play in the next week.

Sinton is best known for a successful playing career that took in Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.

Sheffield Wednesday also splashed out a then club record £2.75m for his services in 1993.

The Solihull-based ace won 12 England caps,

including the 1992 European Championships.

“I’d be interested in the job, it’s a club with a lot of potential,” said Sinton.

“I’d like to see where the club wants to go and how they are going to get there. I’d love to hear about their plans and tell them my ideas.

“Telford is a club with a great fanbase,” he added. “I played there with Burton Albion a few years ago, and it was a lovely stadium.

“I know quite a bit about the club and the Blue Square North league, even though I haven’t managed in it myself.”

Sinton is one of several high profile ex-players linked with the position at Telford – with Tim Flowers and Jeff Kenna also thought to be in the frame.

Experienced Blue Square North bosses including Jim Harvey (Stalybridge) and Dean Thomas (Hinckley) have also been mentioned.

* Tickets, priced £15, are still available for Telford’s end of season presentation night on Saturday, May 15. For more information, contact Anton Gunter on 01952-567546 or 07500-888739
