Gary Peters pinpoints the man for Shrewsbury Town

Former boss Gary Peters believes Shrewsbury Town must appoint a manager with League Two know-how – even if it means overlooking the star names.

On the day his former assistant Leroy Rosenior ruled himself out of the running, Peters outlined what he believes to be the ideal profile for Paul Simpson’s successor.

And the man who spent nearly three-and-a-half years at the Prostar Stadium helm, during which time he guided Shrewsbury to a play-off final, believes an understanding of the lower Leagues is imperative.

“I’m sure there will be some big names who fancy it but the most important thing for me is that whoever gets the job understands the division,” said Peters.

“Unless you get something like this season when Notts County have had a massive budget, the teams in this division are fairly similar.

“It’s quite a strong division and you don’t get too many weak sides and easy games.

“You need a manager that can get a squad and team spirit together to graft for 46 really tough games.

“Rochdale have had that spirit this season and been very successful with it.”

Peters believes there will be no shortage of applications for a post he holds in high regard.

“The Shrewsbury job is one of the best around,” he added.

“You have got a great support base, a brand new ground with good facilities and a chairman (Roland Wycherley) that lets you get on with the job.

“If you lose your job at Shrewsbury, it’s your own fault.”

Rosenior was a popular figure during a brief spell as assistant to Peters, but has ruled out a return.

“I haven’t had any contact with anyone and I’m not looking to get back into management at the moment,” he said.

But there remains numerous applications and potential candidates for Shrewsbury’s Board to sift through.

Paul Sturrock and Graham Turner remain heavily linked while Paul Ince could be a candidate.

Former Wolves defender Mark Venus has confirmed his interest after spells as assistant to Tony Mowbray at West Brom and Celtic,

Men with League Two experience who could be interested include ex- Stockport boss Jim Gannon and Alan Knill, who has been doing a strong job at Bury.

Agree, it does seem strange that Gary Peters is entering into the discussion. He does seem to keep close contact with the club.

” knows what its like to pull on a Town shirt ” What a load of tripe. Wenger never played for Arsenal and Ferguson never played for United. Its a misconception that has haunted Newcastle United fans for years..

which manager with any skill would come to manage shrewsbury town, with the directors we have. there is a pattern developing here

peters- play offs, fallow season, bullet!!

    simpson playoffs, fallow season, bullet!!

when are we going to give managers a chance at this great club

i suggest roland and co would not recognise a good manager when they had one. they are too busy listening to the boo boys. sometimes i think the directors and fans expect too much of our glorious little club.

besides which town will never win promotion with that ruddy lenny the lion badge.

next year our 125th and with new sponsors town had the chance to retail a 125 kit with a modern version of our old traditiional badge with 3 loggerheads and a floreat salopia.

how can we expect town to perform well without the borough latin motto floreat salopia- let shrewsbury flourish on the players chests?

come on greenhous knock some sense into that bunch of lamebrains in the shrews board room.i rest my case aj.

Just pointing out that the cats on Shrewsburys coat of arms are actually Leopards. There is no historical heraldic Lion connection with the town. Lenny the Lion is a silly immature cartoon invention {even the names nicked from a 50′s/60′s ventriloquist act} by someone too lazy or stupid to do a little bit of local research. Atcham Jack has a point. Leopards are swift agile cunning and deadly…Lions are often the opposite, preferring their victims to be wounded sick or the runt of the herd. Time for Lenny to hang up the suit maybe.

….basically Leopards like to sprint hard to get places, Lions are content to hang around the same old waterhole to see what turns up. Ring any bells Mr. Wycherley?

When Oh when are we going to get back to real football at Shrewsbury when the footballers on the pitch give 150% every match, when pride and passion means exactly that. Whoever takes the managers job, i want to see them out on the lanes of shrewsbury running like in Turner’s days. Players who live to play and never rest until they are loved by the fans.

This is all about loving the game and not about how famous someone is. Great managers graft harder than most players and that sets a standard, whoever is capable of that basic standard should be considered. Also where have all our great links with scotland gone over the years, we used to get great promise north of the border.

I’ll travel the 170mile round trip next season if i see that delivery from every player on the pitch. The last player capable of this spirit was Ben Davies…alsas no more.
