Fans voting on new stadium name
Wednesday 5th May 2010, 8:00PM BST.
Fans were today voting for the name they want Shrewsbury Town’s home ground to adopt next season.
Shropshire-based car dealership Greenhous has announced a new three-year deal with the club, which will see the firm sponsor the ground, in Oteley Road and the front of the club’s home and away shirts.
The firm has asked supporters to vote which one of five potential names they want the £15 million stadium to be called from August.
Supporters were asked to vote for either the Greenhous Stadium, Park, Coliseum or Arena — but now have the option of Greenhous Meadow after pressure from fans.
Comments on shropshirestar.com from supporters urged the sponsor to include the Meadow name.
Graham Owen said: “There is only one name in my opinion: The New Meadow.
“There is a great need to retain the connection with past glories and tradition and at the same time the word ‘New’ leaves no doubt that we are on the way forward.”
Meanwhile, Mark Cheshire said: “None of them really inspire. I would much rather the ground reflected the club not the sponsor, though I understand the reasons for it.”
Elsewhere, messages have been posted on websites run by supporters of Notts County and Hereford United among others urging people to vote for Greenhous Coliseum.
However, Ian Bebbington, operations and commercial manager at the club, said: “Shrewsbury Town is extremely fortunate to have such a loyal, stable and local sponsor as Greenhous.”

There can only be one name for Shrewsbury Town football stadium and that is New Meadow.

How about “mid-table obscurity” or in the interest of alliteration “mid-table mediocrity”

Awful suggestions, have to agree with Jon as it has to be “New Meadow”.

how about Oteley Road?

Very ill thought out by whoever thought it was a good idea to have an internet poll on this.
Fans of other clubs are already hijacking this in their droves in an attempt to ensure that the, very embarrassing, ‘Colosseum’ option is chosen.

Greenhous New Meadow, “The Greenhous” for short

I assume by his post that Aussie Dave supports the non-league mediocrity down the M54 who’s ground should be named after the local council that props it up financially.

why not simply call it THE MEADOW, thats the name always given by fans at the old gay meadow and the new pro star stadium, fans will always refer to it as going down the meadow so why not kep it simple,we dont need prostar or greenhous as the sponsers keep changing, come on fans its your ground, dont let the sponsers have all the say.

The stadium has to be called The New Meadow and should be known by that for all time so that we can have at least some part of the clubs tradition remaining. None of this changing the name every three years. I know Keith Sayfritz does a heck of a lot for the club, but I personally think that the board have had problems getting another sponsorship company given the Towns dismal performances of late and now with no mamager that’s why he has come to the clubs rescue by offering the Greenhous deal. With Greenhous in the stadiums name sports headline writers will have a field day when they write their match reports.” Shrewsbury’s opposition too hot to handle”. The name Greenhous will, after all, be on the teams shirts and other merchandise. While we are at it get rid of that Mickey Mouse logo the club calls a badge.

‘The Greenhous Meadow’???? Well I suppose it’s better than Coliseum!!! It’s an absolute disgrace that the name is even up for auction to whoever has the deepest pockets. Yes we need to change with the times to keep the club afloat and running strong, but somethings should never be played with. The Town have always played at ‘The Meadow’ for as long as I’ve been a fan (25 years). The name means a lot to a lot of fans, it’s where we go to see our boys play week in week out. It’s a weekend home to a lot of us. Would the board like to see the name of their homes change everyother year? I doubt it. These words might seem strong, but think about them and you’ll realise how angry the fans are.

Think of Man City’s Internet poll when their stand was renamed “The Bell End”. As stated by a previous poster, this is open to abuse. I understand the reasons behind sponsorship, however the decision to turn to a Internet poll lacks a certain degree of intelligence. Sort out town otherwise the strong fan base will soon turn their attentions elsewhere.

- New manager every two seasons.
- We sell our best players and replace them with garbage.
- We change the name of our Stadium whenever it suits – Greenhous Coliseum you’re having a laugh aren’t you? That Wrexham supporters suggestion of the New Camp a couple of years ago was better, at least that joke had a punch-line.
- The farcical badge with the clipart lion on – bring back the loggerheads!
- PA system that no one can hear.
- A chairman who won’t admit he’s taken the club as far as he can.
I hate to admit it but my beloved club has become a joke. Sort it out.
Nice Sunday lunch though.
