Newport v Allscott

Tuesday 4th May 2010, 7:30AM BST.

Brilliant Allscott produced a superb team display to crush much-fancied Newport by 107 runs in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League.

Having lost their opener against Bomere Heath, it’s now back-to-back wins for the Sugarmen and their form on Saturday is sure to make their rivals take note.

The hosts clocked up a solid 253-8, with skipper Chris Starling insisting it could have been more.

Chris and brother Carl put on 59 for the first wicket, but it was Andy Wiggington (72) and Dave Finney (53) who did most of the damage.

“Andy was making his first start of the season and he hadn’t picked up a bat since the end of September, “Starling said.

“It’s quite annoying that he doesn’t have to practise and he still gets runs like they’re going out of fashion!”

Newport’s reply never really got going, with seamer Martin Jones proving their chief tormentor.

He took 7-36 as the men from Audley Avenue were blown away for 146.

The men setting the pace at the top however, are still Wem — who made it three wins out of three as they saw off newcomers Trysull & Seisdon.

The visitors from Staffordshire were skittled for 112, with Danny Cohen taking a fabulous 8-27.

That total was never going to be enough to trouble Wem, and they got home for the loss of just two wickets.

Weather

Will Savage finished unbeaten on 45, with Martin Gaunt alongside him on 24 not out.

Much Wenlock had started the weekend with a 100 per cent record as well, but the weather put paid to their chances of keeping up with Wem.

They were entertaining former champions Reman Services, who had reached 132-3 when the heavens opened.

Reman skipper Mal Serplet had looked on his way to a century, having reached 73 not out. Both sides had to settle for six points apiece.

The weather also called a halt to the south Shropshire derby between Ludlow and Quatt, which had looked set for a thrilling finale.

Ludlow had been restricted to 179 all out, despite a defiant 63 from Richard Moolman. Jimmy Arbuckle took a fine 5-48.

Quatt were 82-3 in reply when the rain came, and that was enough to earn them 10 points to Ludlow’s nine.
