Sturrock and Windass in frame for Town
Caretaker boss Stuart Delaney believes Shrewsbury Town's new manager will inherit a squad good enough to win promotion from League Two.
Caretaker boss Stuart Delaney believes Shrewsbury Town's new manager will inherit a squad good enough to win promotion from League Two.
Delaney's first game in charge ended in a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe on Saturday.
A host of big names have already been linked with getting the nod to replace Paul Simpson in the Town hot-seat.
Mark Venus has confirmed his application, while former Hull Striker Dean Windass - at the Prostar for Sky on Saturday - also revealed that he would be submitting his CV.
Former Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock continues to be strongly linked to the post, while Notts County manager Steve Cotterill is a name on the rumour mill, with his future at the financially unstable champions in doubt.
And Delaney is convinced that the man eventually appointed will be in a strong position to bring success to the club.
"The players that we've got in that dressing room are good enough to go and get promotion," said Delaney.
"Unfortunately, it's just been one of those seasons where it's not quite worked for us.
"We've had the hard work and the organisation, but it's been the little bit of quality in the final third to go and put the ball in the back of the net that has been missing.
"It's a good opportunity for the new manager coming in to put his print on the squad, to try and develop the team and give it a push.
"The facilities and set-up here is geared for a higher division. The next manager who comes in will be very lucky."
Delaney also believes Simpson will bounce back and will be a success in the future.
"He's a very good manager," said the stand-in boss. "The funny thing is that he might even bounce back in a higher division than this.
"That's football. Decisions are made, it's a difficult situation but I wish him all the best in the future and I'm sure he'll be a success."
