I’m right man for Bucks job insists Kenna
Monday 3rd May 2010, 12:21PM BST.
Premier League title winner Jeff Kenna has set his sights on furthering his burgeoning managerial career with AFC Telford United.
Kenna, who helped Blackburn to the 1995 Premier League crown, today confirmed he had submitted his application to chairman Lee Carter.
The 39-year-old has been based in the Midlands since a two-year spell with Birmingham City, and also played in the non-League ranks for Kidderminster Harriers.
Kenna’s first managerial post came in the Republic of Ireland at Galway, where he led the club to safety, before going on to St Patrick’s Athletic – who he led to the fourth qualifying round of the Europa League.
The former international believes his pedigree and experience makes him the perfect man to succeed Rob Smith at the New Bucks Head.
“Telford is a sleeping giant,” he declared.
“It’s a very well-run club with excellent facilities.
“I played for two years at Kidderminster and am well aware of what is needed at that level. I still have a lot of contacts. I’ve spoken to the club and I believe there is a Board meeting tomorrow so I’ll take it from there.
“I live in Birmingham but when I was going for jobs a couple of years ago my lack of experience counted against me,” he added.
“I went to work in Ireland to get that experience and I feel now I could do the job.”
Kenna is one of several big names to have declared their interest in the position, with former Shrewsbury chief Jimmy Quinn also applying – though he has now gone for the vacancy at the Prostar Stadium too.
Ex-England internationals Tim Flowers and Andy Sinton have also been linked, while former Peterborough chief Mark Cooper has confirmed his interest.
* Telford’s youth team face Newcastle Town in the final of the Midland Youth Floodlit League at Solihull tonight (7.30pm).
