Past winners cue final spot

Saturday 24th April 2010, 9:19AM BST.

There will be a familiar name on the Shropshire Star Snooker Knockout Trophy in 2010.

Shifnal’s Matt Davies and Karl Dooris, of the Raven Hotel in Whitchurch, came through contrasting semi-finals at Shrewsbury’s Reman Services club last night.

They have shared the last three titles and will now meet in next Saturday’s final at Chelmarsh Sports & Social Club.

The 2007 and 2008 champion Davies saw off Anstice’s talented 16-year-old Tom Maxfield 4-0.

The run of the balls went against Maxfield, who recently reached the European under-19 Championship quarter-finals, in the opening two frames.

But Davies was in impressive form and a run of 81 helped him secure a whitewash victory.

The other semi-final was in sharp contrast with Dooris edging out Ian Duffy, also of Anstice, in a last frame decider which finished shortly before midnight.

Dooris led all the way and missed three match balls to seal a 4-2 triumph.

Duffy forced a decider by taking the sixth frame on the black. But he suffered a kick in the concluding frame and defending champion Dooris held his nerve to clinch a 4-3 victory by taking the last 58-32.

Duffy’s consolation was a break of 87 in frame two which equalled the highest of the tournament, also achieved by Davies.
