Watkins takes reins at Tigers

Great Britain international Tom Watkins has been named as the new coach of Telford Tigers in their first season under fans ownership, writes CAROLINE GARBETT.
Watkins had a three-year playing spell with Tigers from 1996 and has spent the last decade with Coventry Blaze. But he is now ready to make the move into coaching.
Chairman Alan Gould said “The Tiger Tracks supporters’ trust is delighted to have captured Tom Watkins as its first key signing for the 2010-11 season.
“His playing career credentials, combined with his great experience in developing young players made him an outstanding choice.
“We know Tom is keen to progress as a player-coach and we are thrilled that he has chosen to make this career step with Telford Tigers.” Watkins, 32, was born and raised in Durham, and has enjoyed a successful stint with Coventry Blaze, with whom he has lifted the Elite League, playoff and Challenge Cup titles.
He has also regularly been selected for the GB team, coached by Coventry boss Paul Thompson.
Watkins lives in Telford and has been head coach for the town’s junior development programme for the last two years. “I have had 10 fantastic seasons with Coventry but I now see this as a good opportunity for me,” he said.
