One of the last remaining banks in Bishop’s Castle has closed its doors for the last time – despite hundreds of people signing a petition in a bid to save it.

The Barclays branch closed yesterday, leaving HSBC as the only major bank following the closure of the Nationwide branch last year.

About 800 people had signed a petition calling for the bank to be kept open, and the town’s Shropshire councillor Charlotte Barnes has also pledged to raise the matter with Business minister Vince Cable.

The decision had also been criticised by Ludlow MP Philip Dunne and local town councillors.

But Barclays chiefs have insisted the decision was taken due to declining customer numbers over the past few years.

Probably nobody buying their worthless services.

never mind Bob Diamond and the rest of his band of thieves have more to lose than most of us now it will hit them hard, I hope when you pass them sitting on the street with a bottle wrapped in brown paper and a tin mug with a sign Family to support you will remember how they treated us and put a generous donation in his tin mug.

C'mon Jeffb. You can not seriously believe such people shall ever become destitute!

If I were in their shoes I be cock-a-hoop. A whacking great big pay-off with ongoing perks and after dinner speaking for the rest of my days! Easylife.

If you want to focus these people, don't throw a penny in his tin mug but make people accountable and then throw them in jail.
