Wellington Town clock to be officially unveiled
Tuesday 4th October 2011, 3:20PM BST.
Wellington’s £10,000 town clock will be officially unveiled this weekend after a succesful campaign to return it to its former home.
Wellington Community Clock will be officially unveiled on Saturday by campaigners who battled to return the landmark to the town’s Market Square.
A joint celebration organised by Wellington Town Council and the Tick Tock Campaign will start at 11.30am.
The clock started working again last Friday. It was moved to the town’s new £7.5 million civic quarter this year before being taken away altogether.
A petition with more than 6,000 signatures persuaded Wellington Town Council to agree to return the clock to the Square.
Music will be provided by Wellington Town Band and the ceremony will take place at noon.
Wellington’s Town Crier Percy Simmonds – who was also at the original ceremony in 2000 – will again proclaim the clock’s installation.
Campaigner Peter Jones said: “We hope that those in the community that backed us in our endeavour to return the community clock will come along and celebrate what ‘they’ have achieved.
“Well done Wellington.”

It all happens in Wellington doesn’t it?
The excitement, the throngs of people all rushing to see this earth shattering event.
I thought they’d all seen the clock before anyway. Has it magical healing powers I wonder?
What a boring place Wellington must be for such a non event to attract such attention, and what boring people must live there.
The mind boggles.

Colin, you have absolutely not grasped the whole point. That ‘boring’ clock was dedicated by the people of Wellington in memory of loved ones for the future generations. It brought a lot of personal pride to many people. It is so sad that your sarcasm cannot see past this ‘non-event’ for you. As it is one that is very much an event for people in the community. Our community is FAR from boring, it is a lively active and growing community. One that is run by people who listen to what the community wants when they are shown to have made a wrong decision. I believe that is called democracy? My suggestion is, stay away if you are that bored by it, it has obviously prompted an emotion from you so it can’t be ‘that boring’ now can it?
This is an event to put a POSITIVE full stop on a local issue that upset a lot of people. There will be those, who have never experienced the need to fight a cause and to win who will say “So what?” but this issue, the return of the COMMUNITY CLOCK is a ‘big deal’. It was removed with a lot of public objection in the first place and through the PUBLIC wanting it back it has now to be returned.
Please try not to denigrate this event with your opinion – you lack insight and as you seem to not live here, you also seem to lack community spirit.

Ah Colin D what a masterpiece of a comment.
The story is about people power overturning a local council decision and returns the clock to the focal point of the town. The clock was removed even after public consultation suggested the clock should remain in the square, the council decided it would look best in their new civic quarter.
A group of us set about getting something done about it and we have.
Your are more than welcome to come to the town this Saturday and enjoy the shops, local market & many other things the town has to offer…. but then again I guess you don’t get out much and sit in front of the computer writing silly little comments!!!!!

Colin you have a dull tone in what you are saying reminiscent to Clement Freud in the Minced Morsel advert on the television many years ago. I take it not a lot impresses you then !
