Lib Dem councillor Peter Phillips steps down
Tuesday 16th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A leading Liberal Democrat councillor today announced his shock decision to step down after more than three decades in Shropshire politics.
Councillor Peter Phillips, who represents Bishop’s Castle on Shropshire Council, said he lacked the “youthful vigour” to continue.
The move has sparked a by-election for Mr Phillips’ seat, which is expected to take place in late September.
Mr Phillips said: “After such a long time, I first stood in 1973, when local politics has been my consuming interest and ambition it’s a really tough decision. But I’m conscious in recent years of not having quite that youthful vigour.”

Peter you will be greatly missed the only councillor to make a public stand against Kim Riley and his Tory inner sanctum.

So sorry to see Peter step down.
He can never ever be replaced.
What a dedicated man.
Many thanks

Even though Cllr Phillips is not a member of The Liberal Party not we do not sit on the same authority, I hope that his dedicated service is fully recognised.
To be elected and re-elected since 1973 is a statement in it\self
In Liverpool we recently used the office as Hon. Alderman to recognise a long serving cllr -

Peter has given long and distinguished service both to the pre merger Liberal Party and to the Liberal Democrats. As a County and District Councillor in neighbouring Worcestershire I cannot imagine Shropshire without him.
As Chair of the National Executive Cttee of The Liberal Party, I am grateful for his educated service to the cause of Liberalism. Thank you Peter, I wish you a long and hpy retirement.

I have known Peter since 1967 when we were both researching in the Shropshire Records Office, then in the Shirehall.
A wonderful person, loves his country and his adopted county, Shropshire.
I hope there is some work, especially in the environmental area, that Peter can be persuaded to take up, so he can keep his hand in matters that he is so good at, and and so that he will continue to benefit everyone.
Hope to see you, Peter, either there in Salop or perhaps here in Pennsylvania, as you did once back in around 1970.
Congratulations!
