Meet the soldiers of ‘Carrier Platoon, 5th Battalion the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry’. We can’t tell you where it was taken, or exactly when – although it looks Second World War era. However, we do have the names. They are: (back row) Privates Banks, Jones, Andrews, Jackson, Griffiths, Moore, Dicken, Owen, Perry, Lewis, Jordan. Thanks to 64-year-old Malcolm Brown of Finland we can bring you this photo of Much Wenlock carnival in 1958 or 1959. “I was brought up and educated in Much Wenlock. I got married to a Finnish girl, Kirsi-Marja, and moved to Tampere, Finland, in 1973. Apart from a 10-year period in the UK I have been here since then,” he says. “My father and mother were George and Dorothy Brown and they were Mayor and Mayoress of Much Wenlock on three occasions. Both are now deceased. My sister Lynn still lives in Buildwas and my other sister Janet lives near Welshpool.” Malcolm e-mailed this picture and provided one or two names: From left, Valerie Moore, Janet Brown (his sister), Jennifer Grainger. He names the older lady and the gentleman with the chain as Mayoress Philips and Mayor Bill Philips.

Earlier this week a lady came into our office in Shrewsbury asking about a picture published in the Shrewsbury Chronicle of the Queen’s visit to the county town in 1952. She asked if the picture had been cropped. She knew that a picture had been taken which showed her mother looking out from one of Shrewsbury Castle’s windows. We checked but nothing had been cropped off. The lady left disappointed. But then we came across this, unpublished photo of the same occasion, in which you can see a huddle of faces in the castle window. We don’t know if this is the photo the lady remembers. But it might be. Incidentally, it shows the Queen and Prince Philip leaving the castle with the then Mayor of Shrewsbury, Colonel J M West, and the Mayoress.
