August 10, 2012 09:00 Pictures from the Past - Aug 10 See this week's round-up of nostalgia pictures, taken from the pages of the Shropshire Star. 1 / 5 Don’t get carried away, but competitors are lined up on the starting grid for a wheelbarrow race with passengers. The location is highly likely to be Bucknell and from the attire, the 1920s seems to be the era. This picture came from Miss Margaret Evans, whose maternal grandfather William Smith owned the village stores, Smith & Son, and whose paternal grandfather, James Evans, was the Bucknell signalman for many years. Here is another photo from a sports day of the past and, continuing our occasional look at Shropshire sports which have not yet gained acceptance at the Olympic Games, here is a sack race at the Willey coronation sports, near Broseley. Although the photo is undated the likely date is 1911. Picture: Ray Farlow. This photo harks backs to the days when a converted hangar at RAF Cosford was a major venue for international athletics, called the RAF Cosford Arena. The date written on the back of this print in our files is April 8, 1993, which is odd as the last athletics meeting was held in the arena the previous month, and the last top class event there was in February 1991. Sadly those in the photo are not identified. Tweet See this week's round-up of nostalgia pictures, taken from the pages of the Shropshire Star.Click on the gallery to your right to get started.
