With the opening of the new Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley this week, it means that the days are numbered for the old 1930s Madeley Modern School building. This photo comes from Martin Jesse whose father used to have a butcher’s shop in Waterloo Street, Ironbridge. He believes it is about 60 years old and shows girls who all went to Madeley Modern. On the bottom row, second from right, is his sister Lucille who is now in her 70s and the girl next to her (third from right) is Rosemary Fletcher. No further details are known, including the location, but the Regatta Field at Coalbrookdale is a strong contender.

It’s over 50 years since this photo was taken of the Cock Inn at Hanwood – it dates from July 1961 – and there were obviously changes afoot as on the back of the print in our archives it says simply ‘auction of Cock Inn, Hanwood’.

Your nostagia pictures are allways great,these days I live in Australia and read the star every week,but the Helicopters would have been from Tern Hill not Shawbury .

In the 1960,s I was flying out of Shawbury in Vampire jets , we did not have any choppers there
