Pictures from the Past – Feb 24

Come fly with me . . . We’ve got very little information with this photo, although we do know the photographer was from Ludlow and written on the back of the print is ‘South Shropshire & North Herefordshire Gliding Club. A fair member’. As, according to a 1931 Flight magazine, the club secretary was based in Bull Ring, Ludlow, this may well be an early Shropshire lady glider pilot of the 1920s or 1930s. A caption reads ‘a flashback to pioneer days when there was no cockpit and usual dress was a leather coat, rubber boots, and inevitable cloche hat, and as many woollies as could be mustered’.

Recognise anyone? This is a street party in Montague Place, Belle Vue, Shrewsbury, in about 1952. Among those in the picture is a very young Bill Sandford, who lived in Montague Place at the time. He is the little boy on the left hand bench of the table on the right, nearest the camera with blond hair and scowling. Mr Sandford, who now lives at Haughton, near Shrewsbury, says the street party was an annual event. His mother Eleanor Sandford is back, centre, between the two ladies wearing glasses. The shorter lady, back fourth from left, is a Mrs Davies, and seated in front of her, slightly to the left, is Mrs Millichope, who is carrying a child, her daughter, presumably, who appears to be sucking her thumb. None of the others is identified.
