Pictures from the Past – Jan 27

The demolition of this building in Waterloo Street, Ironbridge, in March, 1986, sparked a protest. Taxi driver Raymond Jarvis parked his car across Waterloo Street, blocking it, because he said workmen ignored his warnings about the building next door to his home, which he said had contained asbestos. The building formerly housed a cinema and milk yard and had been disused for over 15 years.

Thank you to John Powell of Oswestry for e-mailing in this picture, which he is hoping somebody will recognise and identify. It was in a box of old glass plate negatives he has in his store – he collects film and photos – and he thinks they are probably from the Oswestry area. John thinks this could be a fairground and points out the sign on the trailer on the left reads: ‘Greatorex’s Up To Date Leaping Horses’. Another clue is the building in the background, which has a sign on the front, and may well be a pub. Based on the fashions, the date of the photo may be around 1910.
