Pictures from the Past – January 20

Shhh . . . Two unidentified youngsters are enjoying the facilities offered by the brand new Madeley Library on September 18, 1969. The library was one of the central features of the redevelopment of the heart of the town. Madeley centre has been redeveloped again since – and the library has survived intact.

Catching up on the news from back home are these young Shropshire National Servicemen in Osnabruck, Germany, in 1960. They were all drivers in the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry, and the photo was loaned by Terry Hoggins, of Arleston, who went on in civilian life to work at Haybridge Steel Works in Hadley as a crane driver. Terry, now 72, names the group as: left, in dark top, Ray Humphries, from Ludlow; Mick Williams, from Hadley; front left, Des Lloyd, from Shrewsbury; behind him, Jack Havers, from Oswestry; then Terry Hoggins, at the very back; Brian Tong, of Newport, holding the paper; and Terry Deakin, from Donnington, far right. Terry says the only one he still sees occasionally is Mick Williams at a caravan site at Borth. “My son has a caravan down there and Mick has as well.”
