Coalbrookdale apple day brings out the crowds

Monday 10th October 2011, 2:04PM BST.

Hundreds of people packed out an event in Shropshire which saw gallons of apple juice produced for the thirsty crowds.

Saturday’s bright autumn sunshine brought hundreds of revellers to the Apple Day at the Green Wood Centre, in Station Road, Coalbrookdale.

The big draw was the 19th Century restored one-tonne apple press, which was used to squeeze juice out of all the apples visitors brought along on the day.

Small scale presses were also available for children to have a go and there were free tastings of both apple juice and cider.

Jude Walker, chief executive of the Small Wood’s Association, which hosted the event, said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day.

“You could hardly move for the amount of people, there must have been about 1,000 so for our venue we were really packed out.

“People spent a lot of time chatting, eating the hog roast and drinking cider.

“We have recently opened a wood product shop and was doing a good bit of business too.

“We’ve been holding the event at this venue for about 12 years and it keeps getting bigger and better.”

Other entertainment included apple bobbing, live music, displays from Morris dancers and stalls selling country wines, juices and toffee apples.
