This is the Dyas Bros store in Shrewsbury, but pictured under previous ownership in 1888, by Mr Della Porta. Before Dyas had it, it was a greengrocers with a cafe above. Presumably the gentleman pictured is the proprietor. This photo was loaned by Andrew Dyas. The Dyas business is 120 years old, having opened on October 10, 1891, at these premises at 14 The Square, where it remains in the same premises, although these days it goes by the name Jane Dyas.

In 1942 four Shrewsbury sisters all joined the WAAFs – that’s the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force – at the same time. This photo was printed on May 6 of that year with the caption: “Left to right are Margaret, Olive, Joan and Ethel Dunn, of 105 Castle Terrace, St Michael’s Street, being given a word of advice from Corporal Hay at the recruiting depot. “Their three brothers are all in the forces.”
