Teen beauty spot drinkers are ramblers, not rebels
- Dave Burrows
These Home Guard members are at a special Sunday church parade at Easthope in September 1940 when, as it happens, the invasion scare was at its height. This picture is from Mr John South, of Wenlock Road, Shrewsbury, whose father Harold South was the village blacksmith in Brockton, near Much Wenlock – he is the sergeant in the centre row, one back from the front. The commanding officer was Major Benson, who lived at Lutwyche Hall. He is extreme right, standing slightly apart from the row of four. Front far left is Sergeant Bert Davies, who lived in Easthope and used to have Manor Farm. Standing in front of Mr South’s father is Charlie Russell. Mr South says the photo shows men from Easthope, Shipton, and Stanton Long areas. This picture was originally carried in the Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News of September 14, 1940.
