Pictures from the past – week ending September 30
Friday 30th September 2011, 9:14AM BST.
Don’t say we never bring you sunshine. Here they are, Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, opening Randlay’s new 7-Eleven store in Telford on July 21, 1978. Centre, in the glasses, is Mrs Helen Pinfield, who had queued for two hours to be first in the store. The story used with this picture said: Eric Morecambe cut the tape and pensioner Mrs Helen Pinfield told him: “I was first in the queue.” “Really?” he replied. “How old are you?” “Seventy” said the proud Mrs P. “Oh,” said he, blinking. “How old were you when you started queueing – 60?” The shop was the second of its kind in the country. It was based on an American convenience store, opening long hours and selling a wide variety of items. By the way, if you’re too young to remember Eric and Ernie, Ernie is the one with short fat hairy legs.
A round-up of this week’s Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures.
