Pictures from the Past – week ending September 16, 2011
Friday 16th September 2011, 9:01AM BST.
Please admire young Jean Oakley’s dress because it cost her a fortune. Jean, who loaned us the picture and is these days Jean Hassall, of Red Lake, is standing second from right and this photo was taken in the field opposite “The Jerry” – the White Hart pub – in Hinkshay Road, Dawley. “I think it must have been something to do with the Sunday School. It must be coronation year (i.e.1953) or just after. That dress I’m wearing had coronation carriages all around the hem. It was ever such an expensive dress – 19s 11d out of Wellington market.” She has the following list of names: Back, standing from left: Roy Corbett, unknown, Eric Haywood, Iris Yates, herself Jean Oakley and Norman Kelsey. Kneeling left, Ken Lloyd and Jeff Harris and front, bottom, T. Rodeas (?), Peter Harris, Keith Parton, John Lloyd, Ian Phillips and unknown, but possibly Joan Nickless.
