A music festival in Shrewsbury has proved a big success and helped to raise about £10,000 for charity, organisers said today.

Quarry Fest attracted about 1,000 people to the town’s park for an evening of live music on Saturday, with performances from the likes of Fight the Bear, Andy O’Brien, The Taste, Katie Brisbourne and Radio Riots, as well as tribute acts Oasiz and Under the Fridge, which plays Red Hot Chili Peppers’ covers.

The event was held in order to raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospice, which revealed earlier this month that public donations are about 40 per cent down on what had been expected at this stage in 2011.

Kelly Goodall, who helped organise Quarry Fest, said the event would provide a much-needed boost for the charity, which cares for terminally ill children. She said: “We hope to have raised £10,000. It is the first time we have done it and for a first time event it is fantastic.

“Our donations have been down this year so we are having to do all we can to raise as much as we can. Events are very, very important to us.”

She said both the crowds and performers had enjoyed the event.

“It is difficult to put a pin on who was the best act because all of them were great.

“All the bands did it free of charge and gave up their Saturday night, so I would like to say ‘thanks’ to them,” she added.

She added that she was also grateful to local company Select-a-Skip, whose sponsorship for the event meant that all the money raised could go to Hope House.
