Status Quo get fans to rock all over Quarry
Saturday 16th July 2011, 11:32AM BST.
Status Quo had their fans rocking all over Shrewsbury’s Quarry as they entertained a crowd of about 7,000 people with a selection of their greatest hits.
Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and company took to the stage in Shrewsbury just after 9pm yesterday.
They got the crowd immediately on its feet and dancing to the band’s 1973 hit Caroline.
Over the course of a set lasting for about an hour and a half, the group rocked their way through many of their best loved tracks, interspersed with more recent songs from their latest album Quid Pro Quo.
The band saved some of their most well-known songs for the end of the gig, getting the crowd bouncing up and down and singing their hearts out to Down Down, Whatever You Want and set closer Rockin’ All Over the World.
They returned to the stage for a short encore, playing rock ’n’ roll music before the night was rounded off with a firework display, which lit up the skies over Shrewsbury.
Earlier in the evening, fans of 1970s rock were given an additional treat as 10cc gave a crowd-pleasing performance as the main support act to Status Quo.
They warmed up revellers with renditions of hits such as Donna, The Things We Do For Love and I’m Not in Love.
And they delighted the locals among the crowd by changing the lyrics of Dreadlock Holiday to “I don’t like Shrewsbury, I love it”.
The concert went down well among the thousands who packed the park for the concert and were delighted to see Status Quo in town.
Sue and Dave Coles, from Telford, were among the first to join the queues outside the gates in the early afternoon and made their way to the front of the audience to get the best possible view of the acts.
“We travelled up by train and were walking through the Quarry at 2.30pm and then we went for a bite to eat, but we were eighth in the queue when we came back,” said Mrs Coles.
“This is the second time we have seen Status Quo. We saw them 25 years ago when they were supporting Rod Stewart. I didn’t think we would see them playing in Shropshire and we have had our tickets since January.
“It is a great atmosphere and everybody is so friendly.”
Mr Coles said: “Everyone is here for a good time.
“We might all be getting older but it is a very good age group.”
They were joined at the front of the audience by Rose and Shian Cryer, a mother and daughter from Ellesmere, who described themselves as massive fans of Status Quo, were also delighted to see the band in town
Rose said she had seen the band ten times, while her daughter had watched them perform live on two occasions.
“It’s nice to have them in Shropshire. I haven’t seen them for three years, but last time I was down right at the front as well,” she said.
Shian added: “They get better with age and their new album is absolutely great.” Others further back in the crowd said they were focusing on having a good time at the Quarry concert.
Brian Davies, whose group of friends from Shropshire and Aberystwyth had come along with a picnic, dining table, chairs and even a gazebo, said they were up for a good time.
“We are pretty well prepared, Whatever the weather, we will have a good time,” he said.
Meanwhile, Judy Whittaker from Bridgnorth, said she hoped more big names would be coming to Shropshire soon.
“I hope to see a few more gigs like this in Shrewsbury. I think it is terrific.,” she added.
Steve Woodman from Castlefields, who came to the gig dressed in a purple wig, and said he regularly goes to live music events in Shrewsbury added: “I attend the folk festival each year.
“I have a respectable job but things like this are a chance to let my hair down.”
Mr Woodman said he hoped council officials would look to put on more live music events in the town in future.

yeah it was great, kept me and my young family awake till well past 11, and then to wake up to find endless amounts of cans and rubbish in my front garden. But as long as everyone had a good time. People forget that when they visit Shrewsbury Quarry, people actually live here. Oh and “good Shot” to the person who was sick up my neighbours car. Hell of a shot!!

if you dont like it, mate perhaps you shoudl consider all of the factors surrounding your next prospective house purchase before buying?
Or in plain English: Tough!

Danny, my young family (2, 6 and 8) had a great time rocking to the quo. Perhaps you could try embrasing what the theatre and council are trying to do and support such events – afterall, one day it might just be a band they (or you) like that is booked for the quarry gigs……….. No, people shoud respect other peoples propertry and possessions, but that happens on our estate EVERY night, not just once over one weekend in the summer…….

Danny, if you’re lucky enough to have a young family, I can only assume you’re not that old yourself. Come on, relax and be young! It was Saturday the following day so I’m sure you could have a lie in with the kids. We’ll all get old one day and will have rights to become grumpy old men and women, lets not start too early eh :)

I live next to the Quarry too. Unfortunately though, neither The Quo or 10cc kept my young family awake. They weren’t even stirred by the firework display. Maybe not having my windows open and not expecting to be annoyed helped. Funny, I didn’t see any rubbish the next day.
Maybe the people who deposited the rubbish in your garden were also targeting you for the ‘car sick treat’ but got the wrong vehicle.

Danny, danny, danny. I live in a small mountain town in France, where Status Quo played the following night to the gig in Shrewsbury. Not only did they not start until gone 11, but we also had 10,000 people and 6000 Harley Davidson motorbikes ( see the link).

Oh, and also, maybe buying a house next to the Quarry might not have been such a good idea? Its your own fault you had the noise-you chose to live there!

About the chairs – why did the organisers allow rows of chairs to be put up right in front of the stage? It would be obvious to anyone that fans would want to stand and rock near the stage and the rows of chairs were a menance.
“And everyone was so friendly”? Especially the woman who started swearing at my wife and prodding her in the back because she (my wife) had dared make her way to stand by me near the front (as well as the abuse she was given while making her way through the crowd to get to me). This was probably caused by frustration on the woman’s part. There were so many chairs you couldn’t move properly and this woman probably thought her view had been blocked.
The concert was great but the organisers have to do something about the chairs, otherwise an accident is just waiting to happen. Maybe a no chair zone directly in front of the stage for a suitable distance?

Why wasn’t there any big screens up for the people at the back?

Probably because there were only 7000 people there. There was actually plenty of room further forward, I was surprised when I turned around and saw the crowd stretching so far back.

Great concert, well done everyone involved.

Why do they have to make so much noise, for the public to enjoy themselves, I could hear them over 2 miles away in Mount Pleasant Road.

It’s called a rock gig.

I was there and it was very entertaining. The music was great and we had two headlining bands who could fill most sizeable venues. And yet we had people there whose sole purpose was to picnic, who objected to people standing (it’s what happens at rock concerts), and who almost ignored the talented musicians on stage. Each to their own and if people paid money it’s their choice how they enjoy the occasion, but I saw music fans being berated by people who wanted to sit around tables as if they were at a garden party. Some Salopians have yet to understand the concept of a gig!

Lets hope that there will be more concerts with more up to date people most people seem to have enjoyed it the folk festival soon that is great for shrewsbury vibrant and colourful people not my bag but is good for the town 2 or 3 concerts would be good next year aslong as it’s not tapa’u

Excellent night, thought it could of been a bit louder though.
Lets have more concerts like this in Shrewsbury.

Whats it coming to when 10cc are coming over louder in Coleham than The Mighty Quo? And the firework display…counted about 8 rockets but they were LOUD ones!

Count again

I can assure you that Quo were the loudest and had the best quality sound. Where you were, the changing wind direction will have affected how you heard it, the same as any outdoor gig

a great night well worth the money everyone friendly and well done to those that ogranised it we need more concerts like this in the quarry well done to all concerned

I thought it was a brilliant gig at the quarry, never seen 10cc before, thought they were fantastic, played some of my fav songs, and the Quo were awesome, need more concerts like this in Shrewsbury, thought it was really good value for the money. :-)

Come on Shrewsbury; where’s the rants? There’s far too few above. Something good has happened again in the town. you’re normally all on here slagging off everything about it. Being serious for a moment though, another cracking music night in Shrewsbury, please let’s have more. And a better response from the whingers next time please; you’ve seriously disappointed me.
As we went to the Elton concert we couldn’t afford both but we did sit the other side of the river and I thought it was not a loud as previous concerts.
Someone said 10cc were brilliant and could have been the sole group.
It was obvious the audience were having a great time and the Quarry seems a natural ampitheatre.

Sounds like you are not used to town life Danny.

I didn’t go to the concert as Quo are not my bag, but I could hear them and they sounded amazing! I know plenty of people that did go and they all, without fail, said it was fantastic. These weren’t ‘hard’ Quo fans, they were just out for a good time and some live music. Let there be more concerts I say, it creates a great atmosphere in Shrewsbury and some much needed fun for everyone concerned. For those saying it was too loud (keeping Danny and his ‘young family’ awake past 11pm…..no comment) it’s a rare one off. Chill out and let people have fun, even you don’t want to!

Congratulations to the Shropshire Star on the birth of it’s first Meme.
May I be first to wish the ‘Concert/Helicopter’ Meme a long a fruitful life.
I’m less certain about the ‘To complain about ?’ rejoinder, but even that may catch on.

It was a fantastic night, no ones mentioned “The Big Figure” who I thought were a great opening act. 10cc were superb, and the Quo??? Sublime. This is the sort of night this town needs, and the quarry is an ideal venue. The point above ref chairs at the front is not surprising, as although in the end the organisation was good, I believe theatre severn failed to regognise they had stepped up a level in the sort of gig they were putting on – They failed to realise that most people (from a nationwide catchment area) would be paying their ticket money for Quo alone. Right said fred could have been support and it wouldnt have mattered. Quo should have had a full 2 hour time allowance but hey, as with their failier to recognise the chair at the front problem, a few more of these gigs with the stature of bands such as quo will iron out these problems.

[I was disappointed that there was no helicopter]
Well make a bid to get Iron Maiden next time TW.
They have their own IRON MAIDEN plane and one of the group is a qualified airline pilot and flys it!
Eva, Maiden would be fantastic, though they would need double the capacity the quarry can offer. I would however suggest that Def Leppard be an ideal band, much in the same vein as Quo……..

I’m still waiting for Rammstein to play the Quarry.

I was there, brilliant night, Shrewsbury is getting a name for itself and bringing in the big names!
Does anyone know if it was timelapse filmed like the Elton John gig? That would be nice to see.

Sounds like a great night. Must be one of the biggest gigs in Salop since an ex member of the Swinging Blue Jeans played Baschurch Village Hall back in the 80s. That was quite a night too. Keep rockin’.
Thanks for the Baschurch village hall nostalgia Lenton. Seem to remember some nasty fighting breaking out at some of those gigs though. Some of the people there were in their wellies too. I’m lucky enough to remember Yes playing the Music Hall and good old Chicken Shack rocking us out there as well.
Re the chairs: I’m guessing they were set out for the bands and roadies as they might need a rest between numbers these days.
