Pictures from the Past – July 15, 2011

Friday 15th July 2011, 9:51AM BST.

The Iron Bridge must be the most photographed structure in Shropshire, but this is a particularly nice and interesting view from many years ago. And it is topical, too, as the Ironbridge Gorge Museum is celebrating 25 years of the designation of the Ironbridge Gorge as a World Heritage Site, and its celebrations include a photographic exhibition which runs until the end of September. This particular photo isn’t part of that exhibition, though. It was loaned to us by Kelvin Crawford, of Coalbrookdale. The picture is undated, around 1900 maybe? Note that somebody has written “1779” on the apex of the bridge – that was the date the bridge was built. Note too the long-disappeared buildings right up to the edge of the bridge on the left.

A round-up of this week’s Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures.
