This is one to cut out and keep for children who go to Barrow School, near Broseley, and then to ask themselves: Is this my school? We’re pretty sure, through comparison with more modern photos, that it is, although the door on the left has been lost through an extension. And if we’re right, then the lady in the horse and trap is likely to be Sarah Matthews, a teacher there. The photo was loaned by her nephew Philip Matthews of Broseley. Sarah married Fred Francis, a school attendance officer. She died relatively young.

“Part of RAF Stanmore, now being used as an industrial estate,” was the original caption to this photo, which we first published on February 2, 1972. The photo accompanied a story which told of how proposals to build 1,000 homes on the site had been turned down by the Department of the Environment, much to the disappointment of traders in Bridgnorth’s Low Town, which had felt the new homes would have provided a boost. The old military site was usually known as RAF Bridgnorth and was a recruits’ training centre.
