What was the occasion which led to this finely-dressed young Broseley lady posing on this magnificent horse? This picture was loaned by Philip Matthews, of Broseley, and he thinks the woman may be his aunt, Edith Matthews, who never married. Alternatively it could be another aunt, Edith’s sister, Sarah. She became a teacher at Barrow School and, as Mrs Francis, died fairly young. The gentleman is not identified, nor is the photo dated, although we’re going to guess it’s around 1904.

Let there be music! Another photo loaned by Tony Minton of Bridgnorth today, shows a concert by Adjazz, a swing band formed from students of the Adams School, Wem. It has since been renamed the Thomas Adams School. Tony said: “The picture was taken at a concert given in the William Brookes School at Much Wenlock, perhaps in the 1980s or 1990s. “The performance was faultless and completely authentic and the close harmony singing group delivered their wartime songs with no indication that the sentiments in those songs might well have been almost incomprehensible to those young ladies of a later era. “The band also included a very competent pianist and rhythm section who could not fit on the stage and are therefore out of sight on the main floor level.”
